Effective Leadership with the My Business Report

leadership

Even if it’s just you in your business, leadership is a key component of making an impact as a purpose-driven entrepreneur. It focuses how you spend your time, organize your days, and create a satisfying life.

In short: Infusing strong leadership practices into your business and life will help you to make that impact you dream of making in this world.

Today, we’re looking at a few simple things you can do using the guidance from Business Made Simple’s My Business Report. Business Made Simple created the My Business Report to show you what you’re doing well and what needs attention. It’s broken into 6 areas of business (Leadership, Marketing, Sales, Products, Overhead, and Cash Flow) to help you get a high-level view of the most important parts of running a successful, impactful business.

When you complete the assessment, you’ll receive a checklist that highlights the action steps you’ll want to take to shore up each of these areas of concern. The report you’ll receive breaks down your strengths and weaknesses with in-depth, specific action steps so you can keep doing more of what’s working and address what isn’t.

Let’s get into the leadership portion!

Create a Life Plan to Focus Your Leadership Efforts

Have you ever worked at a job where you felt like another cog in the machine? You just showed up, did the bare minimum, and went home. There was nothing (or very little) that felt fulfilling.

First of all, we definitely don’t want to feel like this in our business. We’ve created it to be exciting and give us a sense of freedom and enjoyment. But sometimes, it can feel like we’re back at that uninspiring job where you just check off the list and collapse on the couch after a draining day.

If that’s how you’re feeling, taking a look at leadership in your business is a must! Even if you don’t feel quite that bad — you just feel less-than absolutely energized and excited and know things could be better — the first place to look is leadership.

The first step is creating a life plan for yourself. Everything you’re doing will flow out of this life plan and help you lead yourself, your family, your business, and your community. It isn’t only about your business here!

Benefits of Creating a Life Plan

There are many benefits of creating a life plan, but the biggest is that you will see yourself as a leader in your life. You’ll soon begin to act with confidence and clarity as you make decisions in your life and business. That leadership will become habitual — part of you and the way you operate — and radiate outward to impact others in your life. People will be inspired by you and your energy!

Here are a few other benefits of creating a life plan:

  • Focus — you’ll have clarity that drives all your decisions. Instead of feeling uninspired and unsure, you’ll know exactly what you want to do each day and the confidence to go and do it
  • Clarity around your life’s mission
  • A plan to meet your goals, both short- and long-term
  • A ritual or routine that you can do each day that will fill your cup so you’re energized by what you’re doing
  • A greater sense of purpose and meaning in all you do

Questions to Ask Yourself as You Create Your Life Plan

  • At the end of my life, what do I want people to say about me and my accomplishments?
  • Given the time I anticipate having left in this world, what will I need to do in 10 years, 5 years, 1 year, each quarter of this year, each month of this quarter, each day of this month to ensure those accomplishments and values are achieved?
  • What will I need to stop doing or decide not to give my time and energy to so that I can instead have the necessary resources to accomplish my life goals?
  • What do I want to do more of that will help me feel energized and “fill my cup” so I have the energy and other resources to dedicate to accomplishing my life goals?
  • What is one step I can take today to walk along that path I’ve set out for myself?

Rally Around a Mission Statement

Once you have your life plan, you can create a mission statement that you can use each day to give you a sense of direction and purpose. This mission statement can be for your life and/or your business.

If you have team members, contractors, or employees in your business, I’d certainly recommend creating a mission statement for your business so everyone knows the values and guiding principles of your business. Everyone will be on the same page and empowered to act in alignment with that mission — that’s a great way to be a leader and display leadership while also letting others personally decide how they’ll be leaders in their own lives.

And if you’re a solopreneur, I’d still recommend creating a mission statement for your business. Write it on a note and stick it to your computer to remind yourself of what you’re working toward. Like a life plan, a mission statement will give you clarity as you show up to do the work in your business each day. It says “This is what I’m doing. This is why I’m doing it. This is what I believe in and how I’ll make a difference in this world.”

I love Business Made Simple’s framework for creating a mission statement: We will accomplish X by X because of X.

It’s simple and memorable. Everyone knows what is expected and how they can contribute to accomplishing those goals.
